Lab-grown vs natural diamonds

Same carbon, same fire, same hardness — the only real difference is where the diamond comes from. Here is what sets a lab-grown diamond apart from a mined one, and why it can be the more beautiful choice.

What is a lab-grown diamond — and is it real?

Yes, it is a real diamond. A lab-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment that recreates the conditions under which diamonds form in nature. It is the same element — pure carbon — arranged in the same crystal structure.

Physically, chemically and optically, a lab-grown diamond is indistinguishable from a mined one. The only difference is its origin: one is grown in a few weeks, the other is pulled from the earth over billions of years. Think ice from a freezer versus ice from a glacier — same thing, different source.

Every Shell Diamonds diamond is selected by expert gemologists and backed by independent grading, so you know exactly what you are wearing.

How they compare

The same beauty and durability. The difference is in origin, footprint and price.

The honest version

What's identical, what's different

Exactly the same

  • Chemistry. Pure carbon, same crystal lattice.
  • Hardness. A perfect 10 on the Mohs scale.
  • Brilliance & fire. The same light and sparkle.
  • Grading. Measured on the same 4Cs and certified.

Where they part ways

  • Origin. Grown in a lab, not extracted from the ground.
  • Footprint. No mining, no land disturbance.
  • Traceability. A clear origin you can stand behind.
  • Price. More carat and quality for the same budget.

The reason it matters

A diamond with a clear conscience

A mined diamond can carry a hidden cost — disturbed land and a supply chain that is hard to trace. A lab-grown diamond gives you the same stone without it.

  • No mining

No earth moved and no extraction. Created in a lab, not carved out of a landscape.

  • Conflict-free by design

A traceable origin from day one — no murky supply chain, no doubt about where it came from.

  • Lower footprint

A fraction of the environmental impact of mining — no extraction, no scarring of the land.

Every Shell Diamonds diamond is independently certified by IGI and laser-inscribed — quality you can verify.

Can you tell the difference?

No — not with the naked eye, and not with a jeweller's loupe. Because a lab-grown diamond is the same material as a mined one, it shows the same brilliance, fire and clarity.

The origin can only be confirmed with specialist equipment used by grading laboratories, which is why every stone ships with its certification. What you see, and what you wear, is a genuine diamond.

Setting the record straight

Common misconceptions

"Lab-grown diamonds are fake."

They're real diamonds. Same carbon, same structure, same certification — just a different origin.

"They're just cubic zirconia or moissanite."

Not even close. Those are simulants — different materials. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond.

"They have no quality or value."

They're graded on the same 4Cs. You're paying for genuine beauty and craftsmanship — not a scarcity markup.

Good questions

Frequently asked

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. They are made of pure carbon and share the exact chemical, physical and optical properties of mined diamonds. The only difference is that they are grown in a lab rather than extracted from the earth.

Do they last as long as mined diamonds?

Just as long. With a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, a lab-grown diamond is as durable and scratch-resistant as any mined diamond — made to be worn every day, for life.

Why are lab-grown diamonds more affordable?

Their price reflects a shorter, more direct journey from creation to you — without the scarcity premium of mining. For the same budget you can choose a larger or higher-quality stone.

Are they certified?

Yes. Each diamond is independently graded on the 4Cs and certified by IGI, with a laser-inscribed number you can verify — so you know exactly what you're buying.
